Queen visit petition; over 10 thousand signatures collected

A Petition by the Gibraltar New Movement, calling for the Queen to officially visit the Rock, has been handed in at Number Six. The group which collected over 10 thousand signatures is extremely pleased with the response, but it says that some people refused to sign as they believed a Royal visit would cause more problems with Spain.
It was the Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia, who received the petition, with 5 representatives of the group attending Number Six for the occasion.
The petition was started online in September last year. Since then, the New Gibraltar Movement has taken it to the centre of town, with signatures also collected door to door. The initial petition was meant to have been presented to the Governor, but the group had a change of heart.
The Monarch’s last visit was in 1954, 61 years ago. The group says the petition is a way of highlighting the warmth of our invitation to the Queen to visit again.
